Günther Hessler who command the U-boat was a formidable enemy. He sank twenty-one ships on just three patrols and stands 21st on the list of highest scoring U-Boat aces of World War II. Because of the aeroplanes on the deck of the Alfred Jones he probably thought the Alfred Jones was a Q-Ship and when she didn’t sink immediately, he went back and finished the job with another torpedo. Ted describes the moment and then details how they survived at sea.
