We capture the personal recollections of our armed service veterans

so their legacy of bravery, sacrifice and suffering can live on.

In the 1970’s a Doctor took it upon himself to record on tape interviews with three surviving First World War veterans that were living near his surgery.  Last year this recording was donated to Legasee by one of the featured veterans grand-children. We know the names of the veterans and we know their regiments. From the recording we can also learn a bit about where they fought. But that’s all we know.

‘Who do You Think They Were’ challenges young people to find out who these men really were.  Developing investigative skills in genealogy and journalism and utilising the incredible resources of the National Archives, ancestry.com and the War Records office, students will learn how to do history rather than having it done to them. Armed with these new skills what can they find out about their own family's history?

Is there a hero in your family?  Funded by the Heritage Lottery our website will enable anyone to upload stories, photos and documents detailing what their own families were doing between 1914 and 1918.

Our website will link to the British Library’s Special Collection on the First World War Centenary. The collection will include snapshots of the First World

War Centenary websites funded by HLF, and will be stored and made accessible online by the British Library in the UK Web Archive. www.webarchive.org.uk
